Attitudes towards Halloween are quite diverse. In the Anglican Church, some have chosen to emphasize the tradition of All Saints Day, while others have chosen to celebrate the holiday as Reformation Day. And many Christians ascribe no religious significance to Halloween, treating it as a non-secular holiday devoted to celebrating imaginary spooks and handing out “treats”.

As the holiday is loosely based on old Celtic legends about the closeness between the mundane world and the spirits at this time of year and the Catholic Church’s celebration of their saints, it is no wonder that Halloween costumes have taken on a rather macabre appearance. The Celtic celebration was on October 31, when ghosts of the dead were believed to return to earth causing trouble and damaging the food supply.

As European immigrants came to America, they brought their varied Halloween customs with them. But because of rigid Protestant beliefs in early New England, the celebration of the holiday was limited. The first American celebrations included public events held to celebrate the harvest. Neighbors would share stories of the deceased, tell fortunes, dance and sing. Colonial Halloween celebrations featured ghost stories and mischief. By the middle of the nineteenth century, autumn festivals were common but Halloween had not reached the entire country.

Immigrants flocked to American in the second half of the 1800’s and as many were Irish fleeing the country that had conceived the holiday. Taking from these traditions the Americans began to dress up in costumes and go door to door asking for food or money and this then became trick or treat.

When we think of Halloween in America, many traditions are associated with the holiday. The most common tradition is dressing in Halloween costumes, which has European and Celtic roots. These cultures believed they could avoid being recognized by the ghosts that came out on the night of Samhain by wearing masks.

Modern day Halloween has also changed the “costume” look. Today with the insurgence of costumes inspired by pop culture Americans tend to see more humorous then scary costumes. Today older children and adults are more likely to attend a costume party instead, where best costume prizes are awarded. Most parties are held in homes but bars and nightclubs also hold similar events.

Halloween has become the second largest “holiday” next to Christmas. It is now a time to dress up, party and trick or treat!

That date is to be part of the new, 3 Dimensional version of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland! This movie has a release date of Friday, March 5th and is getting immense press.
